God’s aim was to bless the Canaanite nations and eradicate their idols
The Canaanite idols included:
Dagan, Sipiš (or Šamaš),Rasap (or Rešef), Adad (or Hadad), Aštarte (or ’Aštoret), Malik (or Molek ), Kašalu (or košarot), Ašera (or ’Ašerah), and Kamiš (or Moabite Kemoš)
Evil practices, immorality and child sacrifice brought judgement and dispossession.
“it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you.” (Deuteronomy 9:4)
430 years after God gives the covenant to Abram (including 215 years captivity in the superpower Egypt), Moses leads the greatly multiplied Israel into freedom. Joshua is commissioned with the job of conquering the Promised Land.
